When a videographer is hired via Craigslist to record the last messages of a terminally ill man, the unnerving performance from Mark Duplass tells you things aren’t exactly what they seem. It’s rare for a found footage film to not belong to the horror genre, and Creep shakes up the microbudget, handheld tradition with a definitively indie slant. Scream’s Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich make appearances in this delightful piece of 90s cheese. A coven of witches at a Catholic high school get up to all sorts of poor taste sorcery shenanigans which, wouldn’t you know, don’t work out all too well for them. ![]() Like many 90s classics, this film is so dated that it loops all the way back around to being iconic. In an age of every CGI movie animals, it’s impressive to see what feral movie magic was once relied upon to dial up the terror. Stephen King doesn’t remember writing this book due to his cocaine addiction, and while some have argued you don’t need illegal substances in order to forget watching this, there’s something to be said about the buckets of sweat and hysterical atmosphere this film produces. It’s slick and charming, with enough to add to the saturated genre. Zombie movies are distinguished largely on one key difference: are they set in one location, or are the characters running for safety? This Korean zombie film has its protagonist the only living survivor of an apartment complex, forcing him to engineer all the tricks and traps one needs when holed up in an undead apocalypse. A haunted hotel debunker (it’s apparently a job) takes residence at The Most Haunted Room™, where the most shocking discovery is that John Cusack can make an effort acting-a talent that’s necessary to face up against phantasmagorical happenings that plumb the depths of his psyche and turn him inside out. One of the more restrained Stephen King adaptations, 1408 still dives headfirst into spiralling lunacy with its haunted writer protagonist. From ghosts and demons to regular ol’ nasty human beings, this list of the most frightful films on Netflix UK surely has something to send shivers down your spine.
